Mehmet Ali and Napoleon

by passionate_slacker

So I am writing my Modern Middle East final paper on Mehmet Ali’s interactions with Napoleon. So far I can’t seem to find many sources, but my real problem is finding some good primary source documents for reference. Does anybody know of any sites or books with good info on this topic?

I assume you’ve probably encountered Juan Cole’s “Napoleon’s Egypt” and Paul Strathern’s “Napoleon in Egypt.” I would double check their citations of primary source materials.

Another good place to check for primary source links or citations would be the volume of essays edited by Irene Bierman, “Napoleon in Egypt.” I think those might also be of great use as it presents the perspectives of a multitude of scholars (including the two mentioned at the top).

One idea would be to check out Al-Jabartï’s Chronicle of the French Invasion. There are a few translations and versions of that floating around out there.
