We don't know, because no surviving source tells us. Indeed, only one source claims that the Spartans exposed unfit babies at all, and it was written some five hundred years after Sparta's heyday. Some scholars doubt whether they actually did this or if it is just a myth, even if they did go in for some other eugenic practices. I wrote about this in more detail here.
