What are some great books on the Resistance to Hitler, Mussolini, and Nazi Occupation of France?

by FreeHumanity

I know about that there was resistance movements against the fascist regimes in Germany and Italy as well as the occupation of France. However, I actually know very little of the details of the resistance and would like to learn more. What do you think are the best books on this subject? It can be as comprehensive and scholarly as you want. Or, if possible, personal accounts by people partaking in the anti-fascist resistance. I look forward to reading your suggestions.

I would suggest "Beppe Fenoglio". Italian soldier and, after the 8th September, partisan. He was a monarchic so what you read is pretty much free from propaganda of any sort. He wrote books and short story about his experiences in the partisan war and about people lifes. Just be sure to pick up a decent translation because his prose is pretty much unique.

Hi there, those interested in recommending things to OP! While you might have a title to share, this is still a thread on AskHistorians, and we still want the replies here to be to an /r/AskHistorians standard - presumably OP would have asked at /r/history or /r/askreddit if they wanted non-specialist opinion. So give us some indication why the thing you're recommending is valuable, trustworthy or applicable! Posts that provide no context for why you're recommending a particular podcast/book/novel/documentary/etc, and which aren't backed up by a historian-level knowledge on the accuracy and stance of the piece, will be removed.
