I have a friend, who shall go unnamed, whose father is writing a book about the origin of the huns claiming that they came from north of the black sea and not from east Asia. He constantly brings this up, claiming that history textbooks which claim otherwise are wrong and that all evidence of the huns coming from east Asia is based on mistranslation.
I am no expert, and all that I know is that it seem to be commonly accepted that the huns had been raiding China prior to unification making it unfeasible which forced them westwards. If any of you have more info on this, it would be greatly appreciated.
There's always room for more discussion, but you might want to check out u/FlavivsAetivs's post Here on this topic from about four months ago.
Edited to Add: I was wondering if I could ask a follow-up question, there's a lot of discussion of the connection between the Huns and Xiongu. Part of the discussion seems to travel via India. Are the White Huns (Hephthalites) related as well?
