I recently acquired a German Gewehr 98 (WW1 infantry rifle) that belonged to the 2nd Regiment of the 117th Infantry Division. (Got this information from a disc on the rifle) And I found a Wikipedia page for this division, but there wasn't a lot of info. If anyone has any information on this division, such as where they were stationed at the Somme, at Caporetto, etc. it would be greatly appreciated.
Is there any chance you could share a photo of the disk with us? The reason why I ask is that discs generally seem to have been marked with regimental, rather than divisional, information. Further, the 117th Infantry Division had no 2nd regiment. Rather, it consisted of reserve infantry regiments 11 and 22 and regular infantry regiment 157.
I wonder if it is possible that your rifle actually belonged to the 2nd Battalion of the 117th Infantry Regiment, itself part of the 25th Division.
