When did exile stop being a thing?

by BronzeOfHair

I was in class a few weeks ago and my professor said that Socrates had the option to accept exile instead of the death penalty, which was a common choice in the ancient Mediterranean world.

When did that stop being an alternative?

Sorry if this breaks any rules mods. It's Tuesday, and college, so drunk. Remove at your discretion.

Followup question: how bad was exile in antiquity? I remember hearing stories of people who were exiled from Greece or Rome simply living in a neighboring country, keeping most of their wealth - is this typical throughout that time and region? Throughout Europe while exile was used as a punishment?

Not to discourage further discussions or answers, but there was a similar question from about a year ago with some good answers: https://www.reddit.com/r/AskHistorians/comments/6mljvl/why_dont_we_use_exile_as_a_punishment_any_more/ Particularly the answer from /u/124876720.
