I read a newspaper article saying Kennedy was the last President to skip laying a wreath at Arlington on Veteran's Day. I tried searching for what happened on this day, coming up blank, but I do see videos of Kennedy at Arlington in 1961 and 1963. I take it he was sick or maybe something to do with the Cuban Missile Crisis although that ended about two weeks prior to Veteran's Day?
The JFK Daily Diary at the Miller Center at the University of Virginia shows that he and Jackie were at their Glen Ora property in Middleburg, Virginia that weekend. They were having a house built there. I guess he decided to do that instead of lay a wreath at Arlington. The daily diary shows they arrived at Glen Ora at 5:32pm on Saturday November 10, arriving back at the White House on Monday, November 12 at 9:05am.
Presidents have schedules each day that someone keeps track of and are part of the public record, regardless if they are doing something public or private. Though that doesn’t mean all activities are recorded/available nor does that mean all activities are detailed, especially private activities. For example, on Sunday, November 11, the dairy says “no other further activity this date” at 2:15pm. So we don’t have a record of what he did the rest of that afternoon.
