Please Be Aware: We expect everyone to read the rules and guidelines of this thread. Mods will remove questions which we deem to be too involved for the theme in place here. We will remove answers which don't include a source. These removals will be without notice. Please follow the rules.
Some questions people have just don't require depth. This thread is a recurring feature intended to provide a space for those simple, straight forward questions that are otherwise unsuited for the format of the subreddit.
Here are the ground rules:
Top Level Posts should be questions in their own right.
Questions should be clear and specific in the information that they are asking for.
Questions which ask about broader concepts may be removed at the discretion of the Mod Team and redirected to post as a standalone question.
We realize that in some cases, users may pose questions that they don't realize are more complicated than they think. In these cases, we will suggest reposting as a stand-alone question.
Answers MUST be properly sourced to respectable literature. Unlike regular questions in the sub where sources are only required upon request, the lack of a source will result in removal of the answer.
Academic secondary sources are prefered. Tertiary sources are acceptable if they are of academic rigor (such as a book from the 'Oxford Companion' series, or a reference work from an academic press).
The only rule being relaxed here is with regard to depth, insofar as the anticipated questions are ones which do not require it. All other rules of the subreddit are in force.

How much, in USD, was an Ottoman Pound worth in the early 20th century( 1914-1918)? How about a piaster?
I'm reading the Salih Turjman diaries and references to how much he got paid a certain day( e.g. 8 1/2 piasters) or that a dinner for the higher-ups in his commissariat cost 30 Ottoman Pounds.
I just want a reference point as to how much any of this is worth.
The Teutonic Knights are often depicted with horned or winged Great Helms, Did they actually have these? (I’ve seen a picture of a museum example)
But more importantly, Did they wear them into battle or only on parade?

Also the Teutonic Brothers have been referred to as the the bearded ones, Were Great Big Bushy Beards! an official rule against vanity? An unofficial custom picked up from their time in Outremer? Or just a popular fashion choice in all the big monastic military orders?
Who was the first french soldier killed in ww2?
Where does the term 'Voodoo economics' for the 'Reaganomics' come from and what does it mean?
Since I started to read the novelization of the Miyamoto Musashi life, It kept knocking my head about when did the ancient Asians had contact with other societies, Musashi life is around 1584-1646 and in this very same time my country (Brazil) was a really fresh Portuguese colony which probably didn't even imagine that samurais would be fighting for the government and for Honor.
So, is there any historical registers about the first enconters? I'm really curious about what did the Asians thought about this different people with different values and looks.
Thanks!
I was working on a project relating to Chinese history and couldn't find an explanation for the way we refer to Chinese emperors: why is it "the Kangxi Emperor" (of Qing) versus "Emperor Taizong of Tang" ? The only pattern I could see glancing at a few examples was more of the "the X Emperor" references in the Ming and Qing compared to the latter in earlier dynasties, but I can't claim to have been particularly comprehensive.
What was the Urban vs. Rural population ration in different European countries at 1939 (or late 30s in general)?

Is there a proper name for "cavalier" hats of the sort popular during the 17th century? I've read lots about the fashion of the period but I've never come across a real name for them.
