All I know is that its the American interpretation of a Dutch holiday called Sinterklaas. Sinterklaas is a saint (Saint Nicolas) who gave presents to children and stuff. He also owned a bunch of black slaves so I think thats why they changed it to elfs for santa. In Holland we have a lot of protest about sinterklaas becouse we still use the black slave thing altough we dont call them slaves anymore ofcorse.
