Did immigrants of NYC/early America often end up in situations that were worse than where they came from and want to go back?

Most immigrants came to the 'New World' because they were escaping poverty and bad living conditions back in their home country, right? But how did they feel about things once they got here? Did they often want to return (but maybe couldn't because of a lack of finances, or maybe they did sometimes return)? What kinds of records are there about this?
