Acadians were the French colonists in the North American colony of Acadia located in the modern day provinces of Nova Scotia and New Brunswick, Canada. During the 18th century the colony changed hands between France and Britain 7 times, the final time after the French ceded control of Canada with the Treaty of Paris at the end of the Seven Years War (AKA the French and Indian War). The British were distrustfull of the Acadians, who refused to make a pledge to fight for Britain if conscripted, and some of whom aided the French during the war. This distrust and desire for Acadian lands led the British to expell the Acadians from the colony. Between 1755 and 1764 the majority of Acadians were rounded up and deported. Some went to other British colonies, some to France, and a large amount to the French colony of Louisiana on the Mississippi where they would form the community now known as Cajuns. A minority (around 2600) managed to remain in the Maritimes where a community of their decedents still live today. Depending on where you live, you are likely are descended from some of the diaspora communities.
