Were sea shanties universally known in the age of pirates/privateers?

Im not very good at history, but one thing I really enjoy is Pirates. Lately, Ive been looking at differences betwen pirates and privateers. I know shanties were used to kinda keep time when working on ships and theyd keep tedium at bay, so it stands to reason privateers would also be singing shanties. But do they sing the same ones? Were there even universally known shanties or were they all kinda just made up?
