During the Cold War, did the West (US, UK, Western Europe) consider Soviet university degrees to be comparable to theirs in terms of quality of education?

by dj_cubed

Would a Soviet citizen who graduated from a university in the Soviet Union have a degree which would be seen as comparable to those in the United States, the United Kingdom, or other Western-aligned nations? Would this differ significantly between different areas of study in Soviet academia (physical sciences, social sciences, humanities, etc)? And would this differ from large universities like Lomonosov State University and Leningrad State University when compared to smaller universities in other parts of the country?
