Title explains it, what was it like. I'll put the questions into numbers, making them easier to answer.
(1) What was it like to join the Reichswehr. Was there any difference between joining the Reichswehr and the Wehrmacht? Were there specific places they went, or did they go to the local barracks? Was there any education requirements.
(2) Was there any difference from someone willingly joining the Wehrmacht, and someone being conscripted?
(3) If someone was willingly joining the Reichswehr did they have an option of what they could join (e.g. if you wanted join the army and become a tanker, did you have that option, or the navy and you wanted to be a submariner, could you join that), or were you placed into your role?
(4) Same as (3) only for Wehrmacht.
(5) How did you join as an officer.
(6) Was there any difference in basic training.
(7) Were there any battalions to a specific area, e.g. someone in Bavaria signing up, was placed into a Bavarian battalion?
(8) Any other random facts you might have
Sorry if some of them overlap. I'm writing war stories.
Edit; With reading the moderators' comment, I shall express that all war stories are to be unbiased, and objective, and will respect all answers, and ask others to do the same
One of my war stories focus on three brothers, two born in 1914 and one born in 1924. The twins have a drastically different opinion of the Nazi Party. One utterly detests them while the other supports them, but condemns them in their treatment of 'undesirables' (Jewish People, Homosexuals, etc) their younger brother supports them, willing to put his life on the line for Germany because he grew up with their propaganda. I shall leave it there as I don't want to spoil it
Hi there - we're happy to approve your question related to your story, and we are happy for people to answer. However, we should warn you that many flairs have become reluctant to answer questions for aspiring and writers, based on past experience: some aspiring writers have a tendency to try to pump historians for trivia while ignoring the bigger points they were making, while others have a tendency to argue with historians when the historical reality does not line up with what's needed for a particular scene or characterization. Please respect the answers of people who have generously given you their time, even if it's not always what you want to hear.
Additionally, as amazing as our flair panel is, we should also point out that /r/AskHistorians is not a professional historical consultation service. If you're asking a question here because you need vital research for a future commercial product such as a historical novel, you may be better off engaging a historical consultant at a fair hourly rate to answer these questions for you. We don't know what the going rate for consultancy work would be in your locality, but it may be worth looking into that if you have in-depth or highly plot-reliant questions for this project. Some /r/AskHistorians flairs could be receptive to working as a consultant in this way. However, if you wish for a flair here to do this work for you, you will need to organize this with them yourselves.
