I've seen some books like World at Arms but I cannot make up my mind.
I'd say Gerhard Weinberg's A World at Arms. It's the course text we use at the university where I've taught WW2 to first year undergrads and is a fantastically thorough book. It's not a short history by any means, but it's the most comprehensive one volume history I've seen.
