I’m currently taking Latin in school, and in the book I found a picture of a Roman standing on top of a Roman legions in the testudo formation. I found this kinda stupid, but is there any historical evidence of this even remotely happening? It seems like the Roman on top would easily just fall through, but I may be wrong. Anyways, here’s a picture: https://imgur.com/gallery/mxjOMYs
/u/XenophontheAthenian provided this fascinating response in a discussion we were having about early medieval formations, which casts doubt on the whole idea of the testudo as a specific formation.
