Napoleon suffered a severe defeat and ignominiously died in a remote island as France recovered from the loss of lives, territory and money. What did the Bonapartists offer France for restoring another Napoleon? A return to glory and triumph? Or just a leader who wasn't a Bourbon or Orléanist?

I know the Bonapartists did get their wish with the Second Empire, but I'm asking both before Napoleon III's accession, and then after his fall but before the death of Louis-Napoleon. What exactly was their appeal? Nostalgia?

From what I understand it was more to do with having stable strong central government. Some historians and critics have argued that the main reason that France differed largely in their transfers of power from the Americans is that the French have a heavier reliance on the idea of a central figure of strong authoritarian government (from old regime), which might have lead to the Jacobin stronghold during French Revolution and the eventual rise of Napoleon the first. The weak government of other rulers might have lead to a belief that another Napoleon would return France to when it was great. That is my thinking about the matter. Hope this helps .
