Postmodernism often emphasizes discourse itself rather than what discourse is "about." So I guess the discursive "symbols"(i.e. words) would be the intersection with semiotics. So I guess you're looking for postmodern historiography.,,? Sorry if i'm totally not giving you what you're looking for.
