I’ve seen a few movies and TV shows set in the 50s/60s (Dirty Dancing, The Marvelous Mrs. Maisel) where relatively wealthy families would spend the summer in a bungalow in the Catskills or a similar environment. How prevalent were these family summer camps in society and what type of people would vacation here? Is it mainly an upper middle class East Coast thing?
Did families do this every year? If so, how would people be able to take the whole summer off of work to go?
What was the culture like?
