What was the mood of the country like while Watergate was being investigated? Did most citizens see an impeachment coming and how many people around Nixon fell before he resigned?

Hi. I’m writing this in the aftermath of Cohen and Flynn’s news and sentencing regarding the Trump stuff. While I don’t want to get political about that, I am interested in what was going on during the fall of Nixon.

Were citizens that voted for Nixon still largely supported? How covered was the investigation? Did prominent people fall and did it change the public persona? When Nixon finally went down, what was the mood and feelings about his presidency?

Sorry if this is vague but in school we were just taught watergate happened and then he resigned, but I want to know what kind of debates and morale were occurring during this period. Thanks!

Taken from an earlier answer:

Most Americans supported his removal, but most Republicans stuck out with Nixon to the end. In August 1974, a week before his resignation, a Gallup poll found 57% of Americans supported impeaching and removing Nixon, while 31% opposed. Among Republicans, 59% said they do not think Nixon should be impeached and removed from office while 31% thought that he should. Despite plummeting approval ratings and economic problems on top of the scandal, around a third of the country stuck with the president through the entire Watergate scandal.
