Post Civil War battles

How long did it take for every part of the country to know the Civil War officially ended? Were there battles that took place well after the treaty was signed? I read that battles lingered really bad in Texas and the Deep South.

No treaty was signed as the US never recognised a separate country. So, the US government didn’t deal with Confederate diplomats or politicians.

Appomattox was the military surrender of the army serving under General Lee. About two weeks later, a much larger army, that of General Johnston surrendered to Sherman. These two events were the end of any hope of the Confederacy establishing a separate country.

The word travelled nearly instantly. Telegraph wires carried the message across the country immediately.

However there were still additional Confederate soldiers, in particularly out west who were not directly affected by those surrenders. The President of the Confederacy was defiant and vowed to continue the fight. But at that stage, there was no chance at all.

A small battle in Texas, about two weeks after Johnston’s surrender is recognised as the final battle of the war. That was the Battle of Palmito Ranch on May 13 1865.

It could be noted that within a year, the KKK was formed and led by one of the top Confederate generals. It was effectively a guerrilla war against blacks, Republicans, and the federal government.
