I'm playing Red Dead Redemption 2 and it got me thinking. Today if I am 15 minutes late it seems like a big deal but back then they didn't have watches to necessarily differentiate time on a quarter hour basis. If I was going to go to someone's house would I just say that I will be there sometime between noon and 6? Would they even say 4:15 or would it just be 4 - 4:30 - 5 - 5:30. I imagine in towns there would be a centralized clock but on homesteads I would imagine some people may not even have them. Were they cheap enough for everyone to have one at home? Would I tell a friend to meet me at 1pm at the saloon tomorrow or what. How did this all work?
This old thread has some short answers, people would use external references (noon, sunrise, sunset) but mostly would have just had a different concept of "on time": https://www.reddit.com/r/AskHistorians/comments/11oxrz/how_did_people_have_meetup_times_before_clocks/
