Please Be Aware: We expect everyone to read the rules and guidelines of this thread. Mods will remove questions which we deem to be too involved for the theme in place here. We will remove answers which don't include a source. These removals will be without notice. Please follow the rules.
Some questions people have just don't require depth. This thread is a recurring feature intended to provide a space for those simple, straight forward questions that are otherwise unsuited for the format of the subreddit.
Here are the ground rules:
Top Level Posts should be questions in their own right.
Questions should be clear and specific in the information that they are asking for.
Questions which ask about broader concepts may be removed at the discretion of the Mod Team and redirected to post as a standalone question.
We realize that in some cases, users may pose questions that they don't realize are more complicated than they think. In these cases, we will suggest reposting as a stand-alone question.
Answers MUST be properly sourced to respectable literature. Unlike regular questions in the sub where sources are only required upon request, the lack of a source will result in removal of the answer.
Academic secondary sources are prefered. Tertiary sources are acceptable if they are of academic rigor (such as a book from the 'Oxford Companion' series, or a reference work from an academic press).
The only rule being relaxed here is with regard to depth, insofar as the anticipated questions are ones which do not require it. All other rules of the subreddit are in force.
Did Venezuela go into the crapper 60 years ago because of Socialism?
I know the answer is no, but some moron I know shared an image that stated how Venezuela had the best health system in the world, a very valuable currency, etc etc. All this was "destroyed" because of socialism.
I don't know anything about the history of Venezuela. From what I gather they were in the midst of a dictatorship and corruption.
Where did the custom of awarding the keys to a city as an honor originate from?
Does anyone have any recommended reading on merovingian Francia to supplement Gregory?
Does anyone have any information on historians employed by the CIA or the CIA's history staff? I briefly saw a lecture on C-SPAN given by a CIA historian and was able to find some brief references to him online, but I can't find much information about the CIA's historical work. I'm curious about when and why that program was started.
This is the info I've been able to find online:
Where any high level revolutionary figures captured by the British during the American Revolutionary War?
What would a late 12th century Iberian (Christian or Muslim) army look like? Mostly spearmen led by mounted knights/cavalry? Or would the average foot soldier have something like a sword or an axe?
After winning the Franco-Prussian War, the then 21 year old lieutenant Friedrich von Bernhardi had the honor of being the first German to ride through the Arc de Triomphe. What did he do to earn the distinction, why was he given the honor?
I'm looking for any recommended reading on the history of alcohol (being imbibed by humans mostly, though I suppose there are exceptions). I'm particularly interested in ancient stuff and modern stuff on the emergence of drinking as a social disease, which would put it in the last 300 years or so maybe
So my question is how's everybody doing today good i hope
During the American civil war did any confederate states have troubles with there own population.?
I heard something about every southern state having union supporters and how East Tennessee was planning to leave the confederacy but are there any examples beside that?
I don't know a lot of Gilbert and Sullivan, but in the bits I do know it seems like the House of Lords is a frequent target for lampooning. Was there anything specific going on at that time they were referring to?
Did the Wehrmacht ever mix panzer and grenadier battalions within the same regiment or brigade?
Like for example the following division template:
PzDiv
-PzRgt
--PzAbt
--PzGrenBtl
-PzRgt
--PzAbt
--PzGrenBtl
-PzGrenRgt
--PzGrenBtl
--PzGrenBtl
--PzGrenBtl
Was it common for immigrants to the United States to name their children after Presidents to assimilate?
Are there any good readings regarding Rome's monarchical period?
Anyone know of any good YouTube channels that focus their content on all the various aspects of the Cold War? I can think of plenty that focus on things like World War 2 but when I went searching for a channel that focused on the Cold War I was unable to find any. I find the cold war extremely interesting so I'd love to get lost in a sea of content about it.
Until what year was the Immigration Act of 1924 enforced?

I have looked at the reading list on this sub's wiki and there seems to be a dearth of recommendations for the history of the British Raj. What are the go-too works on the history of British India, both general but also specialized?
So, Russia, Japan and China committed A LOT of atrocities throught the history but did South Korea anything awful? Is South Korea a truly innocent nation? Or at least most innocent nation in Asia?
Did people from isolated Asian regions like Japan ever had a yellow skin tone?
I remember someone telling me that in the past this was the case because of an over reliance on sea-food produce and lack of access to vitamin-rich fruits in places like Japan, however, I often heard similar and obviously wrong lines of reasoning when speaking about other non-European populations like native Americans claiming that they had a lack of protein in their diets, which I know to be patently untrue.
So I've been wondering, was there a period in history in which the inhabitants of relatively isolated regions in East Asia (like Japan) displayed a yellowish skin pigmentation?, if not, were did this stereotype came to be in the West?
Where do you go to find academic reviews of popular history books? In particular I'm interested in reading Kotkin's Stalin biography, but I'd like to see some reviews (at least of the first volume) before starting.
