"dolphin wig" in 17th-century Rome

I'm reading a book that mentioned a "dolphin wig" recorded in a primary source account of possessions from 17th-century Italy. What is a dolphin wig?

can you include more context? I have a hunch it might refer to the dauphin/dauphine, as in the heir to the French throne and his wife. I think you'll get a better answer if you can give more clues.
