I'm not sure this is the sub you're looking for. This is any idea present in all of recorded history, so there's no really a way to answer it. There's evidence for pre-historic religion, but I don't think that's what you're looking for. Maybe try over at r/AskAnthropology, but the answer is probably we just don't know.
