Were cockroaches a big annoyance in Medieval Europe?

Were cockroaches a problem in Medieval Europe? If so, how would they deal with them? Are there any noteworthy people that had cockroach phobias like today?

As a side question - what were considered to be the most troublesome pests, vermin or parasites faced by medieval Europeans in their households/on or in their bodies/in their fields/in their food/etcetera? Were there any contemporary writings on how to deal with them that have survived to the present day? And were any of the doctors of the day aware of the connection between pestilence and outbreaks of disease?
