How was facial hair viewed in 18th century America? And why the sudden change in 19th century America?

by Ebelglorg

It seems like most men in 1700s US were clean shaven. At least as far as the higher classes went. Then we move into the 1800s and it's hard to find a man without facial hair. And not just facial hair but dozens of different styles. What caused such a stark change in the prevalence of facial hair from 18th to 19th century America?

There is always more to be said, but /u/the_alaskan has responded to a question that answers part of yours:

How would I, a man who can't seem to grow facial hair, fare along my peers in late 19th century western Europe?
