What did the first century apostolic church use the monetary contributions for? Did they build churches?

The first century Church was far more concerned with charity work than buildings, regularly using believer's homes for meeting places:

"44 All the believers were together and had everything in common. 45 They sold property and possessions to give to anyone who had need. 46 Every day they continued to meet together in the temple courts. They broke bread in their homes and ate together with glad and sincere hearts." The Book of Acts 2:44-46

It was not until the conversion of Constantine and the resulting end of persecutions that large scale investment in Infratructure took place, as such things would have vulnerable to said persecutions. Constantine's grandson Theodosius made Christianity the official state religion, and from then on the Church's development reflected that of a civil institution rather than loosely organized faith community.
