I have already searched for a while in support for a thesis, but I was not able to find any credible sources describing the education of languages in elementary school and high school in the province of Quebec (Canada) between 1918 and 1939. Was only French and English taught at school or also some other language? I am especially interested in knowing whether German was taught in some school, either forced for everybody or as an optional language.
Any source discussing the subject or tips on where I could find more information would be greatly appreciated.
Quebec is an interesting case when it comes to the history of education. Most of the writing by ed historians focuses on the transition from a province-wide system of religious education to secular education and negotiating a bilingual identity. I found a reference to the study of Latin in some Quebec schools in that time period but it was related to the "classical" curriculum and its relationship to religious education.
In case this didn't come up in your research, "Secularization and Modernity: Religious Educators and Public Secondary School Curriculum, 1920-1970" from the May 1989, Recherches Sociographiques looks like it might have what you're asking about but you'll probably need to use inter-library loan to get a copy. You may also have better luck by focusing on a particular city or town and looking for a first-person narrative from that era. Good luck!
