In games and movies like Uncharted, Tomb Raider, and Indiana Jones, we see ancient treasures and valuables hidden in tables where every corridor is a deadly trap. Is there any historical bases for such sites being boobytrapped to keep out looters/treasure hunters?

Follow up: if real, how did they come up with them? Some examples from Shadow of the Tomb Raider seem likely, yet they seem to require a good engeneering knowledge.

For example, in said game you may find spikes coming out of the wall when you trip on a linked wire. Could this be real or it's just cool level designing?
