Russian civil war is a topic I really like and I have read quite a few books, papers and lectures about it, but I wanted to know if there some books that a little bit more advanced on this topic?
One of the best books on this topic that I have read is Orlando Fidges book ,,A People's Tragedy: The Russian Revolution: 1891-1924". It was really good, but it seriously lacked anything about how the Soviet power established itself during and after the civil war. It also lacked any information about Soviet westward offensives and politics around it and so on. I read the book a year ago but I seem to recall that it ended quite abruptly after explaining the Bolshevik coup in November. Any book that explains the events after the coup would be ideal!
Another period that I find really interesting is 1920's-1930's in the Soviet Union, but I have found only few books that concentrate on this period and they all are mostly about economical situation. A suggestion for book about politics during that period would be great!
What aspects are you interested in?
Some possibilities would include:
W. Bruce Lincoln's Red Victory is a well-written introduction, but not the clearest reference source.
Evan Mawdsley's The Russian Civil War and William Henry Chamberlin's The Russian Revolution are more useful general histories, and reference sources.
Jonathon Smele's The "Russian" Civil Wars 1916-1926 gives more coverage to the peiphery of the old Empire.
Volin's Unknown Revolution, volume 3, covers the Kronstadt rebellion and the Makhnovist insurgency, from a Makhnovist point of view.
