Think great meeles battles like in rome and such, how did they differentiate from allie to enemy in the middle of battle?

Often times by garb/armor.
If you and all your team wear green and you're fighting guys wearing blue, swing for blue.
Alternatively if your team wears armor and you're fighting guys who aren't, dont seeing for armor.
