Today:
Welcome to this week's instalment of /r/AskHistorians' Sunday Digest (formerly the Day of Reflection). Nobody can read all the questions and answers that are posted here, so in this thread we invite you to share anything you'd like to highlight from the last week - an interesting discussion, an informative answer, an insightful question that was overlooked, or anything else.
This answer by /u/Platypuskeeper addresses a frequently-asked question - and does it in an excellent fashion. With so many questions inspired by recent popularization of Norse myth (and general enthusiasm even without recent publications) it is good to see this thorough, well-conceived answer. It does seem, however, to be overlooked - so I bring it up here.
It’s the first Sunday Digest of the New Year, and I hope all you fabulous people out there have had a good week. I’ve got lots of good stuff to share so lets dive right in!
First up all the weekly features, of which there are plenty! You should absolutely check them out.
First up, a Floating Feature that deserves way more views. Everyone should join in the discussion in 2018 in Reading: Share Your Reading List from the Past Year, and Plans for the Next One!
Did you fine folks know about the Podcast? You should absolutely have a listen to AskHistorians Podcast 127 -- Hockey Fights/Hockey Nights: The Original Miracle On Ice. Tis the Season for Hockey, and I say that as a proud Canadian who barely watches it.
This weeks Friday Free-for-All | January 04, 2019 was a great one. Lots of good discussion and comments.
The Saturday Showcase | January 05, 2019 continues as well! If any of you budding historians out there are trying to work towards your flair, but sadly don’t have questions in your skill set come up very often, this is the place you can do some writing.
And finally, everyone should go check out Look Over Here! It is the 'AskHistorians Best of 2018' Voting Thread. Put together by /u/Georgy_K_Zhukov and the fabulous fantastical Mod team, now is the chance for the whole community to vote on the very best of 2018!
[This answer] (https://www.reddit.com/r/AskHistorians/comments/acx49g/i_am_a_tank_crewman_in_ww2_and_not_afraid_to_die/edc3eun?utm_source=reddit-android) by u/The_Chieftain_WG where he talks about a WW2 tanker's likelihood of burning to death in his tank. But besides the dry statistics of having X% chance in Y tank he also covers why tankers would keep shooting even if a single penetrating shell could effectively remove an enemy tank from the battle and even gets into some of the psychology of fear.
