Was smallpox blankets a real thing?

by Karl_XII_Of_Sweden

If someone can direct me to a post where this has been answered please do but

I was in class where my teacher had said that Andrew Jackson was a bad guy because he gave small pox blankets of the Indians but I found this strange as germ theory wasn't developed until 23 years later from when the Mandan outbreak occurred? can someone help I know biological warfare was used before this but I just dont think its true. If you may also cite some sources. Thanks in advance

TL;DR: Was Smallpox blankets a thing if so please provide sources if not the same.
