Was there a sizable population of Sephardic Jews in northeastern Mexico during the Inquisition?

My mother tells me from time to time that her mother asserted that we were of Jewish lineage, and that our family fled Spain and came to Coahuila most likely as conversos. I have looked up and down for sources about this, but at most I've found an opinion blog in Spanish and a short line in the Catalan-language Wikipedia page for the city of Saltillo, Coahuila. Otherwise, it seems like there's a huge dead end in the anglosphere about this.

I'm really curious to know if we potentially have any Jewish ancestry, even if it's untraceable, and it seems somewhat likely that Saltillo, Monterrey, etc. were all Sephardic havens away from the Spanish, considering how isolated the area was until the beginning of the 20th century.

I'd love to learn more about Jewish history in northern Mexico, if anyone has any information!

The LA Times had an article that told the story of a modern family in New Mexico that had the curious tradition of lighting candles on Friday nights. The article went on to describe how they eventually discovered their Jewish heritage going back to the conquistadors. See http://articles.latimes.com/1991-05-11/entertainment/ca-1293_1_jewish-heritage
