Any book recommendations on Japanese occupation in the Philippines during WWII?

by DeadBolt508

Title pretty self-explanatory, this is a topic of interest so I'd like to read some of the details of Japanese occupation/invasion in the Philippines, especially considering the Philippines was still a colony of the US. I'd also like to learn more about the different perspectives and actions of the Filipino people during that time.

I can help out a little. The occupation of the Phillipines isn't nearly as studied as the Japanese occupation of other parts of Asia. My speculation is that this is due to two related reasons. The first is that it was a fairly short occupation when compared with other Japanese imperial occupations, for example Korea, Manchuria, et al. It was only during active fighting of WWII, and was one in a string that also included Singapore, and French Indochina (Vietnam), etc. In the case of the Phillipines, Japan was just a short (but especially brutal) intermission in a chain of occupation between Spain and the US. Japan wasn't able to make great headway in penetrating the Phillipines culturally, probably in part to heavy pro-US sentiment.

I think this issue is really under-studied, but here's a few texts primary and secondary:

Matthiessen, Sven. Japanese Pan-Asianism and the Philippines from the Late 19th Century to the End of World War Ii: Going to the Philippines Is Like Coming Home?, 2016.

Laurel, Jose P. War Memoirs. Manila: José P. Laurel Memorial Foundation, 1962. Print.

Buenafe, Manuel E. Wartime Philippines. Manila: Philippine Education Foundation, 1950.

Hi! I would recommend:

Agoncillo Teodoro A. The Fateful Years: Japan's Adventure in the Philippines, 1941–1945.
Hartendorp A. V.H. The Japanese Occupation of the Philippines.

I'd go out of my way to say these two are the most important ones.
