The number : One and a half million algerians killed between 1954 - 1962
The number of deaths during the Algeiran War (1954-1962) is contested and there is no real consensus on how many Algerians were killed in total. This is made very difficult by the nature of the conflict itself. The Algerian War was very much a guerrilla conflict in a way that other conflicts, such as the Vietnam War, were not. The civil war aspect of the conflict meant that civilians were killed in large numbers by both sides and could often go unrecorded. The figures below are the most recently compiled.
| Category | Death toll | Cause |
|---|---|---|
| French soldiers | 15,583^1 | Combat against the FLN |
| Algerian (FLN) soldiers | 132,290^2 | Combat against the French |
| French civilians | 2,788^3 | FLN terrorism |
| Algerian civilians | 16,378^4 | FLN terrorism |
| Algerian civilians | approximately 55,000-65,000^5 | Killed by French soldiers |
| Algerian civilians | c. 30,000 | Killed by FLN soldiers |

As we can see, we can get an estimate of approximately 123,000 Algerians killed between 1954 and 1962. To this, we can add Algerians killed by the OAS which was estimated to be around 1,496. These numbers are very much fluid and it's possible that the number could rise with the proper research put into it. However, an exact number seems quite improbable to get at this point, something that we can (as previously mentioned) attribute to the nature of the conflict. Furthermore, there are no numbers of how many Harkis, who were Algerian auxiliaries for the French army, were killed during the war as well as in reprisals afterwards. Historian Martin Evans writes that estimations range from 10,000 harkis killed in reprisals after the war to as high as 150,000. No matter what, the number of 1,500,000 Algerians killed far exceeds any current estimations and should not be considered valid.
