Help with picking weapon for my painting

by goldenbearcz

Hi, i want to make some acurate painting, but dont know much about historical facts. I need some kind of spear/pike/poleaxe or halberd, which was used in late medieval-renesance time by commoners->not experienced warriors, who dont have been thrue big training. It dont have to be specialized for big battles, but more for smaller brawls or 1vs1or2, something like for bridge guardian. Oponents will NOT have plate armor, so i dont need something specialized for plate breaking. Thanks for answers.

If you don't get an answer on this question, I would suggest reframing it. For example, maybe ask what the armament of an ordinary foot soldier or conscript would look like in the time period you are looking for.

It might be useful to discuss setting, themes, characters, etc. Accuracy extends beyond just weaponry.

In which period?

A spear would be the most likely weapon for a person to use, as it was the most common weapon used through the period, however, the person also wearing a sword would not be out of scope as it was legally required that people own swords in much of Europe at the time, and carrying a sword as a backup to ones spear was common. Given the lack of armor, both sides would also likely be using shields.
