From an outside perspective it seems to me that the two halves were vastly different and might have benefited from being able to assign their own laws.

Where as today, it seems many southern states have an issue with things like marijuana legalization and gay marriage, couldn't this issue have been resolved if the country did split into the Union and the Confederacy?
