Did people in Europe know about the Americas prior to Columbus’ discovery?

I know that the Vikings actually were the first to stumble upon America, but was that a European reported event? I know Columbus actually discovered it by “accident” when looking for India, but how common knowledge was it that America(whatever it was at the time) had been discovered by the Vikings?

No one in Europe knew that America existed, those Vikings were only there for a year and then came back to Greenland, that eventually was also abandoned, so maybe other Scandinavians get to know about “Vinland” as they call it, but that knowledge was lost.
