Thursday Reading and Recommendations is intended as bookish free-for-all, for the discussion and recommendation of all books historical, or tangentially so. Suggested topics include, but are by no means limited to:
Asking for book recommendations on specific topics or periods of history
Newly published books and articles you're dying to read
Recent book releases, old book reviews, reading recommendations, or just talking about what you're reading now
Historiographical discussions, debates, and disputes
...And so on!
Regular participants in the Thursday threads should just keep doing what they've been doing; newcomers should take notice that this thread is meant for open discussion of history and books, not just anything you like -- we'll have a thread on Friday for that, as usual.
Where would I go for material on the medieval monarchy in France?
Ideally from the emergence of the Capetians to sometime in the Early Modern Era.
Can anyone recommend some books on early settlement of North America? The only one I've read is Cronin's "Changes in the Land" so pretty much anything you recommend will be new to me.
I’m interesting in learning more about the “wild” west as I’ve heard many of the details have been exaggerated from Hollywood and old stories I’d like to know how it really was back then. I was wondering what books y’all might recommend?
I am trying to learn more about Africa. I would be interested in introductory books on Africa that deal with African's pre and postcolonial social, political, and economic history and interactions with Europe, Asia, and the Americas. I suspect that not one book will do, so if there are multiple books, that would be nice.
Additionally, are there any broader works on the political and economic interactions of that happened in the Old World?
