I'm aware that as a TV show they take certain liberties with events and facts but is this depiction a case of PCing the show, or is it based on real life possibilities?
The Viking female warrior is a fairly commonplace question in this subreddit, so you can refer the following excellent answers in the past:
I can also cite an re-worked excerpt from my previous post in In the historical drama The Last Kingdom, women vikings are shown to be highly competent fighters, many as competent as trained men. Was this common in real vikings?:
Until recently (especially till the end of the 20th century), the most of researches insisted on distinguishing the warrior heroines in Old Norse literature from the real women in general during the Viking Age, and regarded the former primarily as an idealized, exceptional literary figure. These recent finds/ news (of possible female Vikings) might change this traditional view of the role of females among the Viking Age Norsemen.
[Added]: Notes that neither of cited comments above did not directly deal with the viking band that predominantly consisted of female vikings. They rather belong to modern world's imagination, at least not found in the world of medieval sagas.
