Hi, I'm struggling to find information about military action in France along the front lines in 1919. My grandfather's diary states he was near the Argonne front from April 1919-Dec 1919. In his diary he describes being bombed and gassed by German planes and firing a Vikers MG from trenches. But everything I find online seems to end at 1918. Can anyone direct me to some sources for what was taking place in 1919? Thank you so much, Christine
The dates are wrong. "1919" is almost certainly referring to 1918.
The 306th Machine Gun Battalion was part of the 77th Infantry Division. The division arrived in France in April 1918 and entered combat a few months later in June. It saw especially heavy fighting in September to November 1918 during the Meuse-Argonne offensive.
It returned to the U.S. in April 1919.
Found it! Thank you all for your help, I found his draft card online and the list for the transport to England ! Yes, you are correct. For some weird reason he put the wrong dates in his diary and on some photos. Thank you for helping me figure it out!
