The answer to such question is 'no', although the answer to the question Does Germany's population now is equal to one from 1940?' is, conversely, 'yes'. According to census of 1939, population of Germany was 79.3 million, while the last EU census shown that the population in 2011 was 80.2 million (although it should be remembered that in 1939/1940 Germany included Austria, part of Czechoslovakia, Eastern Prussia and Lower Silesia (the latter two being now part of Poland). Does it mean that population of Germany did not increase? Of course not, because such a comparison does not include one small event called 'Second World War', where over 14 million Germans died, left the country or were unaccounted for, as evidenced by the census conducted in October 1946, that gave the result of 65.1 million. Since then, the population of Germany (for few decades divided into two separate states) steadily rose to technically the pre-war number in early 2000's.
