I don't believe anybody knows. We have scant records from that time and what we do have is from foreign sources mainly some small parts of Norse sagas like the Orkneyinga saga. All other details we have are from archeological remains, there simply aren't any sources from the Finns themselves prior to Swedish and Novgorodian settlement. (That i am aware of)
