How do we know about dynastic egypt?

by deathsprophet666

I suppose I'm looking for reading material on how we know what we do about ancient Egypt. I was asked to refute the claim "All we know about ancient Egyptian history is from primary sources that we cherry picked" and I realized I don't remember going into much detail about how we came about our Egyptology knowledge. Thanks guys!

Egyptology Today edited by Richard Wilkinson is a great place to start. It's an overview of how Egyptologists reconstruct ancient Egyptian society, with chapters dedicated to archaeology, history, satellite imagery, art, etc.

Donald Redford has written extensively on Egyptian historiography. His chapter in Egyptology and the Social Sciences: Five Studies ("The Historiography of Ancient Egypt") is a good introduction. The UEE article on "History-Writing in Ancient Egypt" is also worth a read.

Van Seters does a decent job of summarizing the primary historical texts from Pharaonic Egypt in chapter 5 of In Search of History.

Thompson's three volume work is the most comprehensive history of Egyptology, though it should be supplemented with Okasha El-Daly's Egyptology: The Missing Millennium: Ancient Egypt in Medieval Arabic Writings.

Wilson's Signs and Wonders upon Pharaoh (free PDF) is a very readable and engaging history of American Egyptology up to the 1960s.
