Out of all the various ethnic criminal organizations formed from 19th century European immigrants in America, why is it that the Italian mafia alone was able to grow to the scale and extent it did as opposed to the Irish, Polish, etc?
Someone else can expand on this, but this stems from the incorrect assumption that the criminal organization was formed in America. The Sicilian Mafia was well-established in Italy since the 19th century.
