More specifically I'm wondering if the distinction of people as "white" or "black" and the idea of "races" of people began sometime during / was a consequence of the transatlantic slave trade (16th - 19th century,) and if so how/why that happened.
I'm interested in the origin of these specific terms.
Also: Is the idea of "race" distinct from how earlier cultures perceived people from outside that culture?
