What does Hegel define as a World-Historical figure? And why did Hitler name himself as one?

I am curious what passages in Hegel you have in mind as terms like “World-historical figure” often say more about the translator than Hegel or his ideas. If you could maybe cite some passages, I’m sure someone will come along with the German and can help clarify. I imagine this is coming from The Philosophy of History, or some of his lectures. If you’re even flirting with the idea of Hegel=Hitler, as the Nazis did, then consider reading Herbert Marcuse’s Reason and Revolution. Read it, that is, if you decide to lose interest in the whole “why are two Germans speaking the same German vocabulary” question and you’ll be pleasantly surprised that Hegel is really just the surface of that book, just as he’s just the surface of your question.
