Did people yell a lot as a means of mass communication before the telephone & megaphone was invented?

I'm watching Kurosama's Seven Samurai right now, and a character yells towards his village, and they yell back. Did everybody just yell to communcate with each other for long distances like this? I remember seeing a video where people speak long distances through whistling, but I just wonder the extent to which (if at all) yelling was used to communicate longer distances.

like... if two towns were close enough, then they could technically have people who stood within yelling distance of each other, spanning the distance between the two towns, so that news could spread quickly, right? Like in Mulan with the fires!
